When it comes down your money, your accountant plays a crucial role. In order to get higher tax returns it is important that you keep good financial records, so that your accountant can maximize your tax return.

Once you establish the the need for an accountant, you need to know the process to finding that great accountant.

In order to find an accountant it is important to set out a checklist of what you are looking for from your accountant. Make a checklist of your requirement then call some accounting firms until you find one that best suits your particular needs.

Question 1 -  What qualifications and accreditation do they have?

This maybe a suprise to certain people however anyone can be called an accountant so also make sure you see their qualifications.

Question 2-How many references are they able to provide you with?

Always make sure that you ask your accountant if you can speak directly to any current clients. Key points to ask the references are, how reliable are they, how active on accounts are they, do they have communication skills, are they value for money and do they offer many ideas. Bear in mind that you are likely to be given clients that are happy with them! It is important to find the employement history of the accountant that you with be dealing with and how long have they been employed with that accounting firm for.

Question 3- Am going to be given someone to manage my account?

Ensure that you meet with the accountant that will be handling your business. Having a solid relationship with your accountant is crucial, and make sure that you have constant contact with them.  You should have your accountant active before the end of the tax year so that you can make any relevant investments prior to the tax year closing

Question 4 – Is it okay to come and have a look at the offices?

Certainly it is adviseable that you personally visit the office to see the quality and scope of the accounting firm. Avoiding accountants from serviced offices or if they are working from completely run-down premises. However if their premises seem lavish ensure that you find out the fees and charges! If your accountant is working from home, this would raise some concern.

Question 5- When was the business first registered?

When it comes down to your finances unless they are straight forward it is advisable to find an accountant that is experienced. Never simply take their word on it; it is important that you see the evidence. When you arrive at your accountants always look around for the business registration papers to see how long they have been in business for.

Question 7- Why would I select your accounting firm to work with?

Make you get the key points from the accountant why you should use them. You should be looking for you accountant to give you some great reasons why to use their accounting firm.

Having a well structured checklist will certainly help you find a better accountant and hopefully improve your tax refund.
